Chapter Thirteen

Rylee

The next day, I got a text from Chase during the middle of first hour. Normally I wouldn’t text during class, especially not during advanced biology, but texting Chase was such a new phenomenon that I was willing to make an exception. Besides, the large science lab tables were perfect for hiding cell phones.

Chase: Being at school for first hour is extremely overrated.

I was happy he was here but had to hide my smile. Meiosis wasn’t a subject that involved smiling, and Mrs. Kendall didn’t need to know that my mind was not completely on cell division.

Rylee: Not so bad once u get used to it. Besides, drawing!

Chase: The drawing part of my brain is still asleep.

Rylee: Draw something for me.

Chase: Already done. Check your locker.

I almost asked for a hall pass right then and there. I was beyond curious. Mrs. Kendall must have mistaken my hall-pass-contemplation as interest in the topic at hand, because when she turned from where she was drawing on the whiteboard, her gaze immediately fell on me.

“Ms. Dunn, when are the DNA pulled completely to the sides of the cell?”

I searched the drawing on the board to see if the answer was hidden in there, but came up with nothing more than flushed cheeks. “I don’t know.”

This earned me a frown from Mrs. Kendall and a couple of glances from my classmates. The words “I don’t know” weren’t part of my usual vocabulary.

“Telophase two,” Mrs. Kendall answered for me, and gave me one more concerned glance before turning back to the board.

When I turned to my phone, there was another text from Chase.

Chase: Hey, so we’re just going to keep this thing between us quiet, right? Not tell anyone?

I should have been grateful for this suggestion. It guaranteed Mya wouldn’t find out. That she wouldn’t be able to get mad at me for making a poor decision. But something about the request made me hesitate. I had a reason to keep us quiet, but what about Chase? Maybe he was trying to protect me, but I couldn’t help but wonder if this was still part of his fear. Keeping the relationship secret would be another wedge between us, and the more wedges there were, the easier it would be for him to leave again. But drawing something for me and leaving it in my locker was the complete opposite of a wedge. I bit my lip before responding.

Rylee: Yeah, that’s probably best. Gotta go pay attention. Advanced bio.

He responded with the snoring emoji, and I smiled before putting my phone away, forcing myself to pay attention for the rest of the hour. It wasn’t easy, but my grades would thank me for it. As soon as the bell rang, I hurried out to my locker. Mya’s first hour class was farther away from junior hall than mine, so I had a minute or two of privacy.

When I opened my locker, a brand-new black-and-white composition notebook fell out. There weren’t any stickers on the cover. It was clean and fresh and kind of exciting.
